I USED TO TEACH THAT THE FINAL STEP IN CLOSING THE DOORS THAT HAVE ALLOWED THE ENEMY ACCESS IS DEALING WITH THE GENERATIONAL CURSES IN OUR LIVES.

But the more I study this topic, and discuss it with my pastor-husband, the more I see that we were teaching something that was not biblical. Over the last quarter of a century, there’s been a proliferation of teaching about generational curses promoting the fact that, as Christians, all our woes are related to the sins of our fathers and their fathers. It’s been claimed based on the scripture in Exodus 20:5.

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

Scripture is clear that those who are in Christ have been delivered from all the powers of darkness, and no curse can go through the cross of Christ and have dominion over a believer in Christ. However, it is true that before we have become a new creation, a believer in Christ, we can certainly be cursed and have opened wide the door to a cursed life from our own sin and rebellion.

When I worked in the ministry with Vietnam veterans I learned something that helped me connect the dots. We found out that Buddhist Monks would regularly cast curses on our military men who were serving in the country of VietNam.  When I first heard about this fact from a credible source (a former Vietnamese Buddhist who had become a believer) I thought about the scripture in Proverbs:

Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest. Proverbs 26:9

How could these monks cast curses on our men and have them “stick”?

The more time I spent in this ministry, the more evident it became that the curses were only deserved because of the doors these unbelieving soldiers opened to the enemy. With R&R weekends spent with prostitutes and excessive alcohol and drug use, these veterans handed the evil one access to their hearts and opened themselves wide to the curses these monks spoke over them.

What I saw in the devastated lives of so many veterans was so fitting when you think about it. A cursed life…tortured by memories, depression, anger, suicidal thoughts, And what’s more, as we saw them find salvation in Jesus, and repent for their sins, close those open doors, break the power of those toxic soul ties and curses, what freedom and growth they experienced. True victory in Christ!

So, having said that, let’s take a fresh look at this area of curses and take steps to wipe out any residue they may have in our lives.

CURSE

Definition: (Websters) noun

  1. The words that a peson says when he asks God, or a god, to curse someone or something
  2. Something that is cursed
  3. Harm or evil that comes as if in answer to a curse.

(Hebrew – Alah) – A solemn promise between men or covenant between God and man. (Greek – Katara) Means the curse proceeding from God. It is equivalent to judgement without mercy.

What brings curses into our lives?

If we are a believer, we are free from the curse of sin and death. However, our own unrepented-for sin can certainly open us up to harassment by the enemy. There’s no denying that. And that can sure LOOK like a curse!

Then there’s another dynamic of the presence of a curse in our lives. There’s the curse of words pronounced over us as children that can continue to affect us after we come to Christ. This is as close to a generational curse that I can see support for in the New Testament. Those types of words spoken over us are surely a curse (even though they typically weren’t meant to be) and CAN affect us even after we are Christians.

 “You’ll never amount to anything.”

“Why can’t you be like your older brother/sister?”

“How can you be so stupid?”

Those same words were likely said by their mother or father …they didn’t intentionally pronounce a curse on their child, but that’s what happened. And the child believes it because it’s coming from a trusted person in their life. This is why we must gain the mind of Christ, meditate on scripture, and take every thought captive. These types of curses end up like tapes playing in our heads and must be fought against and taken authority over, reversing the lie with what the Word says about us.

The truth about curses in a believer’s life

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’). Galatians 3:13

“Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”  Colossians 2:14

THE ANSWER?

KNOW WHAT THE WORD SAYS!

“How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? Or how shall I defy, whom the Lord has not defied?”  Numbers 23:8

USE THE WORD AND YOUR TESTIMONY AS A WEAPON AGAINST THE ENEMY.

“And they overcame him by the blood of the lamb and by the word of their testimony”  Revelation 12:11

DO WHAT THE WORD SAYS!

“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to them that hate you and pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute you.” Matthew 5:44

“Therefore if your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him a drink; for in doing so you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”  Romans 12:20-21

“Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.”  Job 31:30

“Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord; looking diligently lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.”  Hebrews 12:14 & 15

“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”  Mark 11:25 & 26

“When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”  Proverbs 16:7

PRAY THE WORD!

PRAYER TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY FREEDOM FROM THE CURSE

HEAVENLY FATHER, IN THE NAME OF JESUS, I AM YOUR CHILD.  I HAVE BEEN PURCHASED BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS. I BELONG TO YOU. I DO NOT BELONG TO THE DEVIL. THE DEVIL HAS NO RIGHT TO ME AND NO POWER OVER ME BECAUSE OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS. FATHER, YOU HAVE KNOWN MY SINS. I CONFESS THEM ALL. I REPENT OF THEM ALL NOW. I ASK YOU TO FORGIVE ME.

FORGIVE ME OF EVERY SIN AND REMOVE THE STAINS FROM MY HEART AND MY LIFE—FOR YOUR WORD TELLS ME THAT WHEN I CONFESS MY SIN, YOU WILL FORGIVE ME OF MY SIN AND WILL CLEANSE ME OF ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS . I CONFESS THAT ONLY MY SIN BRINGS CONSEQUENCES IN MY LIFE. IF THERE IS ANYTHING I HAVE NOT REPENTED FOR, BY THE POWER OF YOUR HOLY SPIRIT, BRING IT TO MY MIND SO THAT I CAN.

LORD, YOU KNOW I CANNOT REPENT FOR SOMEONE ELSE’S SIN, BUT LIKE NEHAMIAH, I CAN ACKNOWLEDGE THE SINS OF THOSE WHO HAVE INFLUENCED ME, MY ANCESTORS, MY SPOUSE. I CONFESS ONCE AGAIN THAT I BELONG TO JESUS AND OTHER PEOPLE’S SINS HAVE NO POWER OVER ME. AND I THANK YOU THAT ANY CURSES THAT WERE ALLOWED INTO MY LIFE AS AN UNBELIEVER HAVE NO AUTHORITY OVER ME NOW, BECAUSE YOU HAVE REDEEMED ME FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW.

IN THE NAME OF JESUS, I NOW REBUKE, BREAK AND LOOSE MYSELF FROM CURSES THAT HAVE BEEN LEVELED AT ME IN THE FORM OF LIES SPOKEN OVER ME OR BY ME IN THE FORM OF LIES SPOKEN OVER ANOTHER. I BREAK THE POWER OF EVERY SPOKEN CURSE—OF EVERY EVIL THAT CAME OUT OF MY MOUTH. I TAKE BACK ALL GROUND I EVER YIELDED TO THE DEVIL AND ESTABLISH MYSELF IN FAITH IN THE LORD JESUS AND CLAIM THE BLESSING RATHER THAN THE CURSE.

I BREAK THE POWER OF EVERY EVIL WORD THAT WAS KNOWINGLY OR UNKNOWINGLY SPOKEN AGAINST ME BY ANY OTHER PERSON OR CULT.  I CANCEL THAT SPOKEN WORD AND THE POWER OF THE CURSE IN THE AUTHORITY OF THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.

I BELIEVE IN YOUR POWER, LORD JESUS: I BELIEVE IN YOUR REDEMPTION. I BELIEVE IN MY HEART YOU ARE MY SAVIOR, YOU ARE MY DELIVERER. I CONFESS YOU WITH MY MOUTH AND I CONFESS THAT THE POWER OF EVERY CURSE HAS ALREADY BEEN BROKEN IN THE AUTHORITY OF YOUR NAME.

I COMMAND EVERY EVIL SPIRIT THAT HAS ENTERE BROUGHT OPPRESSION INTO MY LIFE THROUGH THE DOOR OF MY OWN SIN TO LEAVE ME NOW, IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

I BELIEVE YOU

Lord, I pray for every woman who has had the courage to read through and process each aspect of PTSD on our lives, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We’ve covered a lot during this series, so I ask You to continue to increase sensitivity to You, that growth in You will continue and Your Name will be glorified in each life. I pray that You would continue to heal in many small ways every heart represented here. We’ve been destined to be conformed to the likeness of Christ, and so we wholeheartedly say, Have Your Way, Jesus…do whatever You must to conform us to Your likeness…Comfort us in our pain and suffering, that we might turn around and comfort others. In Jesus’ Name, AMEN!
