WE’VE BEEN DISCUSSING IN THIS LAST SEGMENT OF THE SERIES ON DEALING WITH PTSD THE STUMBLING BLOCKS TO GROWTH. THIS TOPIC OF CHOICE IS HUGE, AND WHAT YOU DO WITH IT WILL BECOME A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE.

If you’ve been around Christianity for any length of time, you’ve heard of the concept of free-will. God did not create us to be a bunch of robots who mindlessly perform His will. He created us in His image, to think and feel and make decisions based on what’s actually in our heart and the love we have for Him.

He desires to see his children make choices that will add to our spiritual growth, but gives us the freedom to make all manner of bad choices, and also the result of suffering the consequences for those wrong decisions.

Webster’s states the following:

Choose – verb

  1. Pick out; select from a number of options
  2. Prefer and decide

Do – verb

  1. Carry through to an end any action or piece of work; to carry out, perform.

“Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. DO what it says.” James 1:22

If God gives us a choice, then He expects us to choose. He will not do it for us. So what are the most significant choices we can make? I’m going to boil it down to 12:

WE MUST:

  1. CHOOSE THE WILL OF GOD AND REFUSE THE WILL OF SATAN

“Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and shall call His name Immanuel. Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.” Isaiah 7:14-15

       2. CHOOSE GOD’S WAYS

“Do not envy the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.” Proverbs 3:31

       3. CHOOSE GOD’S WISDOM

“How much better to get skillful and godly wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is tobe chosen rather than gold and silver.”

       4. CHOOSE LIFE

“I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you and I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses – therefore, choose life that you and your descendants may life, and may love the Lord your God, obey His voice, and cling to Him.” Deuteronomy 30:19

       5. CHOOSE TO SERVE

“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.” Joshua 24:15

“NO ONE CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS. EITHER HE WILL HATE THE ONE AND LOVE THE OTHER OR HE WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE ONE AND DESPISE THE OTHER.” MATTHEW 6:24A

       6. CHOOSE TO SUBMIT TO GOD EVEN IN YOUR AFFLICTIONS

“Take heed, turn not to iniquity, for this (the iniquity of complaining against God) you have chosen rather than submission in affliction.” Job 36:21 (AMP)

       7. CHOOSE HIS TRUTH AND PRECEPTS

“I have chosen the way of truth and faithfulness; your ordinances I have set before me.” Psalm 119:30

“Let your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.” Psalm 119:173

        8. CHOOSE TO OBEY

“You shall walk after the Lord your God and reverently fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice.” Deuteronomy 13:4

“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15

       9. CHOOSE TO BELIEVE WHAT HIS WORD SAYS

“For as the rain and snow come down from heavens and return not there again, but water the earth and make it bring forth and sprout, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my Word be that goes forth out of my mouth; it shall not return to me void (without producing any effect or useless) but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:10-11 (AMP)

       10. CHOOSE NOT TO BE BITTER

“See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble.” Hebrews 12:15

       11. CHOOSE TO FORGIVE

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Matthew 6:12

       12. CHOOSE TO CROSS THE JORDAN RIVER INTO THE PROMISED LAND

“The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.” Joshua 3:17

THESE 12 CHOICES WILL BRING SIGNIFICANT CHANGE TO YOUR LIFE BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Before we pray for His help in choosing forgiveness and demolishing that stumbling block from our lives, I’d like to share another song by Judy Kennedy. You can listen to it here.

LET IT GO

©1991 Judy Kennedy

I CAN SEE DARKNESS IN YOUR EYES

I CAN SEE TEARS YOU’VE NEVER CRIED

DRAINING YOUR STRENGTH TILL YOU’RE HALF ALIVE

NOW THAT YOUR YOUTH IS ALMOST GONE

YOU’VE GOT THIS WAY OF PUSHIN’ ON

INTO THE DARK WHERE THERE’S NO LIGHT AHEAD

AND YOU CAN PRETEND YOU’RE LIFE IS FULL OF FUN

BUT EVERYONE NEAR YOU SEES THE HOLE

THAT’S GROWIN’ INSIDE YOU AS YOU START TO RUN

FROM DEALIN’ WITH ALL THE PAIN YOU’VE KNOWN

LET IT GO, OH LET IT GO

I KNOW YOU HAVE SEEN MORE THAN I’LL EVER KNOW

BUT IT AIN’T DOIN’ YOU NO GOOD

YOU’RE NOT GROWIN’ LIKE YOU SHOULD

GOD WILL TAKE IT IF YOU WOULD JUST LET IT GO

I HAVE SEEN LOVE BEHIND YOUR EYES

BUT BABY YOUR FEAR KEEPS IT DISGUISED

AFRAID THAT YOU’LL LOSE WHAT YOU NEVER HAD

‘CAUSE YOU’D HAVE TO OPEN UP YOUR ARMS

LAY DOWN YOUR WEAPONS, DROP YOUR GUARD

TO FIND THE LOVE THAT YOU NEED SO BAD

AND EVEN IF YOU HAVE BEEN BETRAYED BEFORE

BY EVERYONE YOU HAVE EVER KNOWN

THERE’S SOMEONE WHOSE LOVE’S SO PURE

HE PAID IN FULL FOR EVERY DEBT YOU EVER OWED

LET IT GO, PLEASE LET IT GO

EVERY PAIN YOU EVER FELT MY JESUS KNOWS

AND IT AIN’T DOIN’ YOU NO GOOD

YOU’RE NOT GROWIN’ LIKE YOU SHOULD

GOD WILL TAKE IT IF YOU WOULD JUST LET IT GO

LET IT GO, OH LET IT GO

I KNOW YOU HAVE SEEN MORE THAN I’LL EVER KNOW

BUT IT AIN’T DOIN’ YOU NO GOOD

YOU’RE NOT GROWIN’ LIKE YOU SHOULD

GOD WILL TAKE IT IF YOU WOULD

JUST LET IT GO

LET IT GO, OH LET IT GO

EVERY PAIN YOU EVER FELT MY JESUS KNOWS

AND IT AIN’T DOIN’ YOU NO GOOD

YOU’RE NOT GROWIN’ LIKE YOU SHOULD

GOD WILL TAKE IT IF YOU WOULD

JUST LET IT GO

GOD WILL TAKE IT IF YOU WOULD

JUST LET IT GO

FORGIVENESS PRAYER

FATHER, IN THE NAME OF JESUS, I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE;

I HAVE NOT LOVED, BUT HAVE RESENTED CERTAIN PEOPLE AND GROUPS WHO HAVE HURT OR DISAPPOINTED ME.

I HAVE HELD BITTERNESS AND UNFORGIVENESS IN MY HEART, AND RIGHT NOW I REPENT FOR THAT SIN.

I CALL UPON YOU NOW, LORD JESUS, TO HELP ME FORGIVE THEM.

IN THE NAME OF JESUS, I CHOOSE TO FORGIVE:

(AUDIBLY NAME EVERY LIVING OR DEAD PERSON, GROUP, INSTITUTION, OR ORGANIZATION THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS TO MIND. FORGIVE ALL HURTS, DISAPPOINTMENTS AND PAIN CAUSED BY ANY OF THESE.)

FATHER, IN THE NAME OF JESUS, I CHOOSE NOW TO FORGIVE MYSELF.

IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

My prayer for you today is to be willing to choose what is right. Even when you don’t “feel like it” … as you obey He will renew  your heart and grow your desire to please Him.
